Trout Creek Pocket Park
Shade Structure Installed, Fall 2025
After a few years of fundraising, Town of Truckee Planning, and the permitting process, MAP installed the shade structure at the pocket park in Fall 2025. The project was grant-funded by Friends of Trout Creek Pocket Park donors, Teichert Foundation, Union Pacific Railroad Company, and the Truckee Tahoe Airport Agency Partnership Grant Program. This much-needed addition to the park now provides shade and relief to a very sunny spot downtown.
Trout Creek Pocket Park Shade Structure Approved
On Wednesday, August 14th, the Town of Truckee’s Historic Preservation Advisory Commission approved the Trout Creek Pocket Park Shade Structure, a significant milestone in our community's development efforts! This additional community benefit for the pocket park, which has been in the works since 2018, with design, engineering, and construction supported by Ed Lupyak and Peter Beaupre of Prosser, Building and Development, Inc., is finally moving forward in 2024. The funding phase is supported by grants and donor support from the Tahoe Truckee Airport District, Union Pacific Railroad Foundation, Teichert Foundation, and the Friends of Trout Creek to bring the shade structure to life!
The shade structure, consisting of steel posts and a perforated metal roof, will cover both park ada tables. This exciting addition will provide year-round shade and much-needed relief at the site, making it more accessible beyond the morning and sunset hours. We are now gearing up to get the permit with the Town of Truckee Community Development Department and will start the installation and construction phase soon after. Once construction commences this fall, we will keep our pocket park lovers apprised!
TROUT CREEK POCKET PARK
SHADE STRUCTURE CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
After more than ten years of project planning and implementation, we are building on the success of Phase One of the Trout Creek Pocket Park by launching Phase Two, which will improve the site by installing a permanent shade structure. As the only ADA-accessible park in Historic Downtown Truckee, Trout Creek Pocket Park provides a significant opportunity for all residents and visitors to participate in the outdoors and community life. The park’s location makes it a natural outdoor gathering place and hub for alternative transit, as it is located near public transportation stops and the paved Trout Creek Trail.
Currently, the park does not have any natural shade, and it can become too hot due to Truckee’s high-altitude mountain environment, with intense solar exposure. The structure will provide refuge, making it more enjoyable and safer for park users year-round. Additionally, the shade structure is designed to serve as public art, fitting in seamlessly with Trucke's historic mountain character and adding artistic value to a public space.
