Tahoe Truckee Earth Day
The largest Earth Day celebration in the region, this free community event takes place in The Village at Palisades Tahoe from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and gives kids and adults the opportunity to learn about recycling, composting, alternative energy, and sustainability through hands-on activities the whole family can enjoy. MAP will have a booth with MAP membership info, priority project updates, kids’ and adult activities, MAP stickers, merch, and more!

This event is a community tradition to learn about sustainable products and services offered by local organizations and businesses, meet local area nonprofits that share Earth Day values, and showcase local entertainment. Our goal is to connect the community with the people and resources found in our region who foster innovation, initiate change and ultimately implement an equitable partnership for a green planet.

This Earth Day, support SWEP (Sierra Watershed Education Partnerships) by buying raffle tickets, and celebrate our 30 years of promoting stewardship in the region. The ticket proceeds will go directly to helping SWEP connect students to the environment and local community environmental issues.

Join in on the fun and bring the Derby downtown for Ladies Night. The event encourages shopping at downtown Truckee merchants to kick off the holiday shopping season and supports the local nonprofit, Mountain Area Preservation (MAP). The Town of Truckee is bringing back the Truckee Community Block Party on Thursday, September 18th from 5-7pm. The event will take place on Donner Pass Road in the heart of Historic Downtown Truckee. The Lost & Found Gravel Ride is put on by our friends to the north, Sierra Buttes Trail Stewardship. Come check out a fantastically grueling race that showcases what recreation in the Lost Sierra Region has to offer. Not interested in their grueling gravel grinder? We don’t blame you; come catch MAP, enjoy their expo, which features industry companies and local nonprofits, and it wraps up with live music to celebrate the race. Our Truckee friends, MOGROG Rotisserie, will also be there, cooking up tasty eats. The race attracts nationwide attendance, and we are excited to join the Expo on Saturday, June 14, in City Park, Portola, from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m.

Now is the perfect time to learn more about Cultivating Community, Conserving the Basin and find out how you can get involved in community planning in the Tahoe Basin. Join MAP at our Project Mixer on May 22nd, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at Bear Belly Brewing in Kings Beach. Project Mixers are FREE to the public and hosted by MAP. 

We will break down all things TRPA, help you understand why it is crucial to get involved, and most importantly, give you the tools to effectively participate in the process. How to look up agendas, how to submit public comments and more importantly, that your voice matters when it comes to civic engagement and stewardship!

Join us at Tuesday, April 1st, at the North Tahoe Event Center to get a project status report from Placer County staff. Please note that you can watch the hearing online, but in a disappointing move, Placer County is no longer allowing verbal public comments through Zoom. 

As a quick reminder, in 2023, Placer County and its consultants proposed a site plan for Dollar Creek Crossing (an 11.4-acre site located across from the 7-11 on Dollar Point) that included an undefined mix of affordable (income-restricted) and achievable (local-worker-restricted) housing. In 2024, Placer County completed a construction cost estimate and financial feasibility analysis to help determine the mix of various housing units that would ultimately be proposed. At the meeting next week, staff will review the outcomes of the analysis and recommend a plan moving forward. If you’re as curious as we are about the future of this site, we hope to see you there!

The final hearing to determine the future of the Resort at Palisades is on the horizon. Join MAP on November 19th (time TBD) at the North Tahoe Event Center to weigh in on Alterra Mountain Company’s proposed plans for Olympic Valley, which include 850 mixed-resort units and approximately 300,000 sf of commercial space, including a 90,000 sf Adventure Camp. From increased emergency evacuation times to exacerbating the housing crisis, the impacts of this development would be massive. Be there and tell Placer County that this is not the right approach to redevelopment of our beloved Olympic Valley.

Join the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) at the upcoming community workshop to learn about a new project to tackle Lake Tahoe's housing crisis while protecting and improving the environment.

Affordable housing is a significant challenge in our community, affecting many residents and workers. TRPA’s goal is to make housing more accessible and equitable for everyone while also improving the environment and climate resilience of the region.
